Frequently Asked Questions

WMATA BikeLink facilities only accept the BikeLink app. If there is a problem and you can't use the app to retrieve your bike, each parking space also has a keypad so you can enter a code to access the space.

The previous bike locker system was designed for long-term use by a single customer using physical keys.

The new locker program uses electronic lockers that can be rented on demand, eliminating the need for physical keys and allowing each locker to serve multiple users. The updated system also expands secure bicycle parking to stations that previously had none and introduces new security features based on research and user feedback.

Requirements:

  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Valid credit/debit card (PayPal cash option coming soon)

Steps:

  1. Download the iOS / Android BikeLink app and sign in or sign up for an account.
  2. Before renting, add stored value to the account using the Account Balance button.
  3. Select a locker in the app, choose the length of rental, and tap “Start Rental & Open Door.”
  4. The selected locker’s door will automatically open.
  5. Park the rear wheel of the bicycle first.

The BikeLink smartphone app is required to park at WMATA’s Smart Bike parking facilities.

The WMATA program uses only the newest BikeLink equipment—none of which are compatible with BikeLink card or Transit Card access readers. All users must have a smartphone with the BikeLink app installed.

If you already have a BikeLink account, the BikeLink app draws from the same online account that powers Transit Card access.

> Note: BikeLink cards have value stored on the card itself and do not draw from the BikeLink Online account.

The keypad provides backup access in case you lose access to your mobile device and cannot use the BikeLink app. BikeLink support can provide a temporary access code via the keypad.

BikeLink lockers and secure bicycle docks located at WMATA stations have a 5-day maximum rental duration. After 5 days, property is considered abandoned. Other BikeLink locations may have different rules.

Lockers come in different sizes:

  • Standard lockers fit most adult-sized bikes.
  • Extra Large lockers offer more space for cargo bikes.

Locker size varies by location—check bikelink.org/maps for the types of lockers available at your location.

Bike parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Use the BikeLink app or website to see which lockers are currently occupied before arrival at your destination.

The locker will only be made available for rental once the app is in range of the lockers, so be sure to be in front of the desired locker before initiating a rental.

After an abandoned bike is removed, it will be taken to Metro’s Lost and Found and stored for 90 days. More details at wmata.com/lostandfound.
